The final part of the ULEZ triptych, “And Then They Said... NO,” is a simple statement—but one that we all sometimes need to be reminded of: we always have the power not to engage, not to comply.
Here, it refers to the extortion of the men and women of England, but in each of our lives, in different ways, we must remain mindful that someone may try to take advantage of our good nature.
I believe people are good. Deep down, we know what is right and what is wrong, but through fear and confusion we can be manipulated into foregoing our inner knowledge. Simply saying “no” can be extremely powerful in preventing suffering, but it can also be an act of kindness toward those who remain ignorant and seek to dominate. If no one ever says “no” to a bully, they will remain trapped in their own pain indefinitely.
